Wood sitting flush against siding traps moisture right where you don't want it, and the bottom layer turns punky and soft before you ever get near it with an axe. A neighbor of ours down the road hunts deer every November and butchers the meat himself out behind his barn, and the first time he saw our sad, tarp-draped pile leaning against the house, he said the same thing every experienced homesteader eventually tells a beginner: get it off the ground, or you're just growing mushrooms for free. He wasn't wrong, and once the siding started showing it too, we knew a real outdoor organization system — something built with actual beginner woodworking sense instead of vibes — wasn't optional anymore.
How Much Airflow Does a Firewood Rack Actually Need?
Here's the part almost nobody tells you: firewood storage isn't just about keeping rain off. Raising your wood off the ground can actually make rot worse if you do it wrong. Build a solid base, or set the rack too low, and you trap moisture underneath instead of letting air move, basically building a humidity tent that pulls dampness up out of the ground and holds it against your bottom logs all winter. Getting wood properly dry means the wind needs to move underneath the pile as much as through it, which is a completely different design problem than just throwing a roof over a stack. Sizing the Rack: Length, Height, and How Much Wood It Holds

We built ours 8 feet long, mostly because that's a standard lumber length and neither of us wanted to deal with the scrap pile that comes from odd cuts. Height came in around 4 feet, which happens to land at a comfortable reach for whoever's grabbing logs, tall or not, giving us somewhere around 64 cubic feet of storage. If you're deciding on dimensions for your own build, work backward from how much wood you actually burn in a season rather than guessing — a rack sized for looks instead of actual usage either overflows by December or sits half empty looking silly. And working from an actual plan instead of eyeballing the dimensions matters more than people expect — the difference between a rack that stands square for years and one that leans by spring usually comes down to whether somebody measured before cutting.
Setting the Base Without Fighting Frost Later
The foundation is where we actually learned something the hard way — just not on this project. When we built our deck posts, we poured the concrete footings without checking how deep frost really gets in the NC Piedmont, and ended up digging up and redoing two posts once the ground shifted that first winter. So for the rack, we did the opposite: no deep footings needed for something this light, just leveled cinder blocks set on solid ground, keeping the whole rack about 8 inches off the dirt. That gap isn't decorative. It's what lets air move underneath the bottom logs instead of trapping ground moisture against them, which is the exact humidity-tent problem from a minute ago. Here in Chatham Mills, outside Pittsboro, the ground holds water long after it looks dry on the surface, so that clearance matters more than it would somewhere sandier. If your own build involves anything sunk into the ground with real weight on it, footings turn into their own whole subject — worth researching properly instead of assuming a shallow hole will hold through a hard freeze. And depending on your county, anything permanent enough or big enough can trigger a permit conversation you didn't see coming, so it's worth a call to your local building office before you pour anything at all.
Building the Frame: What Actually Holds Up Outdoors
For the frame itself, pressure-treated lumber was the only real option anywhere the wood touches the ground or sits under year-round weather — we save untreated boards for anything under a roof or off the weather entirely, which is its own debate every backyard builder eventually has with themselves. Structural screws did the actual work here, not nails and not construction adhesive, because a rack loaded with a few hundred pounds of oak needs joints that can take real shear force, not just friction. Green pressure-treated pine fights you on this, though. Every knot announces itself the same way, that jolt that runs up through your wrist the second the bit catches wrong, right before you either strip the screw head or watch the wood start to smoke. Slow down when you feel that, back the bit out, and reposition rather than forcing it — that one habit alone saves more screws and more knuckles than any tool upgrade would. We used our essential power tools to get everything squared up before driving a single screw, because nothing about this build works if the base frame isn't square, level, and plumb before you lock it down — get that part wrong and every board you add afterward just compounds the lean.
Is Building Your Own Firewood Rack Worth It?
By the time the first real ice storm glazed everything in a half-inch of glass, ours was already loaded and doing its job — no digging a frozen log out of the mud, no fighting a tarp for it. Sixty-four cubic feet turns out to be almost exactly half a cord, which sits at 128 cubic feet by definition, so if you burn through more than that in a winter, plan on building two racks instead of one oversized one. We even scavenged some leftover roofing tin from the greenhouse project to add a small overhang, which keeps the top layer from getting rained on before it dries. We know it's officially firewood season again a different way now, too: watching the shadow off our pergola creep across the patio boards a little earlier every afternoon than it did back in October, which has become as good a signal as any calendar to get the rack topped off before the weather turns.
